Determine:

• type of literature you are evaluating. Is it a novel, short story, poem, or play?
• time period. Is it Modern, Victorian, Medieval?
• origin. Is it American, British, or from another part of the world?

Consider: 

• type of information needed. Biographical about the author? Critical discussion of the work? Historical perspective of the time?
• sources available. Books, articles, audiovisual.
