Why Cite

Citing sources used in your research is important:

  • it shows your readers/instructors that you've done your assignment properly by listing sources you used to get your information
  • it is respectful of other researchers ideas by acknowledging their work
  • it helps you avoid plagiarism, which is a serious academic offense
  • it allows your readers/instructors to easily track down the sources you used for further inquiry

Choosing a Style

Although there is no one standard citation style used at WCJC, many disciplines use the same standard style. Be sure to:

  • Ask your instructor which style they prefer for the course.
  • Consult a style guide for examples of creating in-text citations and citing sources used at the end of your paper.
  • Be consistent with your chosen style throughout the paper.
